Clickers Startup in KL

Congratulations to all the Clickers who joined the Click! Startup Workshop in KL. Over 50 Clickers and their friends came together to startup 7 different ventures including: helping the aged; performing arts for disadvantaged youth; helping single mothers; Kids Helping Kids; helping teenagers with unwanted pregnancies; cultural programs for down syndrome youth; and raising awareness of the importance of sound money management.

In only 3 hours, these amazing youth developed their action plans and budgets for projects designed to give back to their community in the spirit of social responsibility.

Following the presentations to a panel including Ms. Jennifer Stout, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State visiting from Washington DC, the Malaysian-American Alumni Partnership announced the extension of micro-finance soft loans to each group in the amount of RM 200 to help get these ventures off the ground.

Thanks to all who participated, including 2 Clickers from Terengganu and 3 alumni who traveled from Penang.

Were you inspired by the Click! Camp? Are you now kept awake at night thinking of how you can give back to your community? Do you want to learn about starting your own project or business to help you improve your community?

Come join the Click! StartUp!! Youth Social Venture Workshop -- a follow-on program to the highly successful Click! Camp.

The Click! StartUp!! Workshop on December 6th will equip youth leaders with the basics of starting up a project which will have a positive social benefit to their community.

Come join this Workshop and stand a chance to obtain a soft loan of between RM200-RM500 to kick-start your project and turn your ideas of giving back into reality.

The Workshop is a whole day workshop and will also include a presentation to a panel headed by the US Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Ms. Judith McHale. Ms. McHale is the former President and CEO of Discovery Communications, the parent company of the Discovery Channel.

Participant’s meals, materials and transportation to and from and throughout the program will be provided.

The workshop will be conducted by youth facilitators and will be supported by the Malaysian-American Alumni Partnership (MAAP) whose members comprise participants of the various US Embassy exchange programs.

2. Complete the parental consent and release form attached. Bring the form along with you when you come. If you do not have the completed form with you, you will not be allowed to join the Workshop.

3. Think of a creative, innovative and beneficial idea for a project or business that will benefit your community.

4. You are eligible to join this Workshop if you are :

o A Click! Camp participant OR

o An ELS Access English Microscholarship program student in Selangor OR

o Malaysian youth below the age of 17 on the date of the Workshop, preferably those who are active as a youth leader in their community

Giving Thanks

Your favorite Click! Camp Facilitators and Event Staff came together to give thanks for all the teamwork and collaboration at last weekend's 4-day Click! Camp - Alumni for Access.

Everyone enjoyed the American Thanksgiving meal featuring a roast turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie.

Everyone received a personal thank you letter signed by U.S. Ambassador Paul Jones.

Over dinner, the discussion included organizing some more Click! Camps around Malaysia. Stay tuned for some news in the coming days. Do you want more opportunities to Click!?

KUANTAN: Learning English should not be limited to classrooms as some 200 secondary school students discovered in Cherating, near here.

Through a special programme, known as "Click! Camp", the students participated in various community projects that had also helped them improve their grasp of the language. The four-day programme, which ended on Sunday, focused on English language enrichment apart from developing the students' leadership skills and sense of social responsibility.

"It's cool as we were only allowed to communicate in English throughout the programme," said Muhammad Zaim Khairudin from Petaling Jaya.

The Form Three student of SMK La Salle said he was now more confident with his English after partcipating in the programme.

"We are lucky as the facilitators for this programme are the alumni of various exchange programmes between Malaysia and the United States. They understand our problems and know how to make things easier for us," said Zaim, who is the eldest of five siblings.

Some 60 alumni of the US Embassy-sponsored exchange programmes acted as the facilitators in the programme, which was jointly organised by Warisan Global Sdn Bhd and the US Embassy.

The camp also included a training programme for 35 English teachers which was conducted by American English language specialist, Mindy Vesser from Idaho, US.

Muhamad Azri Amir Mazlan of SMK Datuk Ahmad Maher, Kota Baru, Kelantan said it was fun to do all the community services while communicating in English.

"Sometimes we laughed at each other when we used inaccurate words to express our thoughts. But the facilitators were always there to help us find the most appropriate words," said the Form Three student.

The students were also honoured when the US ambassador to Malaysia Paul W. Jones travelled all the way from Kuala Lumpur to join them yesterday.

"I can feel the energy and enthusiasm of all those involved and we will continue with similar programmes in future," said Jones who joined the awareness programme at Cherating turtle sanctuary, English language enrichment event at Chendor kindergarten and repainting of the surau in Kampung Cherating Lama.

Jones said the US Embassy would also assist the Federal and State Governments to organise English learning programmes after it had successfully implemented such a project with the Terengganu state government.
